BMW i8

bmwi8.jpg

the BMW i8 supercar will cost from £99,845 when it goes on sale next year

The new BMW i8 is an all-new hybrid supercar with a plug-in electric motor as well as a 1.5-litre petrol engine. The main aim of the BMW i8 is to be a high-performance car that can still manage low emissions and high fuel economy.

Although the BMW i8 is technically a four-seater car, the back seats look very small and will likely only be suitable for very short journeys or very small passengers. It will rival the Porsche 911 and Audi R8, but is far removed from its smaller brother, the BMW i3 city car, which goes on sale tomorrow (16 November). Read on for everything you need to know about the BMW i8 plug-in supercar.
BMW i8 price and release date

The revolutionary BMW i8 hybrid supercar, which blends huge performance with extremely impressive economy, will cost from £99,845 when it goes on sale in the UK from July. Orders for the BMW i8 are currently being taken and 100 customers have already placed deposits.

A convertible version called the BMW i8 Spyder is also on the cards and is expected later in 2014.
BMW i8 2013 specs

An electric motor with 129bhp is used in the BMW i8 to power the front wheels, with a 228bhp 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine powering the rear wheels. That's not considered a lot for a supercar but the lightweight construction means that the i8 goes from 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds and can go on to a top speed of 155mph. However, the real talking point is that it manages to do this while also being capable of 113mpg and road-tax busting emissions of just 59g/km.

By way of comparison, The BMW M6 coupe (which costs roughly the same as the BMW i8) is only slightly quicker from 0-62mph, but will struggle to do more than around 28mpg thanks to its powerful and uneconomical V8 petrol engine.
BMW i8 dealers

The i8 will be sold alongside the BMW i3, via a new network of special i dealers. Currently just 46 of BMW's 153 showrooms will be authorised to sell and service the i8.

BMW UK managing director Tim Abbott said: “Our BMW i dealerships are located in the areas of the UK with the highest concentrations of population.”

The dealers are across the whole of the country, from BMW Park Lane in London to Westerly Exeter and Williams Liverpool. Showrooms in Aberdeen, Bristol and Jersey will also sell the i range.
Future BMW electric cars

The new BMW i brand is expected to expand into other types of car in the future, and will develop alongside the firm's traditional petrol and diesel-powered cars.

Ian Robertson, BMW Global head of sales and marketing, said: "I'm sure some of the technology from the i8 will wash back into our other cars." That means we could see a BMW i4 saloon car with hybrid or electric power, and even an electric version of the BMW X5 SUV.

Agera R

Agera R.jpg
The 2013 Agera R has all the features and functionalities of previous year models, but also features new and unique solutions to enhance performance and visual appearance even further.

Example of these enhancements are; Visible carbon area on the front bonnet and bumper, new  front side winglets, revolutionary Aircore carbon fiber wheels, the new Aero exhaust, the increased power and the raised rpm limit.

Koenigsegg was the first Hypercar manufacturer to take steps toward green technology with the release of the biofuel CCXR in 2007. The Agera R, based on the highly competitive Agera, follows in the footsteps of the CCXR as it also runs on E85 biofuel.

Among many differences to the standard Agera, the Agera R has an upgraded fuel and engine management system with enough flow capacity to generate 1140 hp and 1200 nm of torque on E85 and E100 biofuel. As there is less energy content per given volume in these biofuels compared to normal petrol, the fuel-system has to manage a flow that is similar to a 2000hp petrol engine, which means that the Agera R’s return-less fuel system has the highest capacity of any car presently in production.
Agera.R.jpg

As the Agera R is a flexfuel car, it can also be run on normal petrol. As 95 octane fuel has less octane than ethanol E85, the power is reduced to 960hp with 1100Nm of torque due to the boost pressure and ignition timing being altered to match the fuel characteristics.

In order to give the Agera R maximum flexibility when it comes to power delivery, Koenigsegg has implement the latest technology when it comes to turbo materials and design. This reduces the inertia of the turbine wheel and axle and therefore gives improved response.

Ferari 599xx

Ferari 599xx.jpg

While based on the 599 GTB Fiorano ,with the same transaxle layout and engine type, this prototype is an extreme track car. Ferrari's engineers have carried out extensive work on the engine's combustion chambers and inlet and exhaust tracts. These modifications, combined with the fact that internal attrition has been reduced and the maximum revs have been boosted to 9,000 rpm, helped achieve the target power output of 700 hp at 9,000 rpm. Particular attention was also paid to cutting the weight of the engine unit components. This was achieved both by optimising forms – as in the new crankshaft – and adopting exclusive materials, as in the carbon-fibre used for the intake plenums. A new gearbox shift strategy cuts overall gear-change times to 60 ms.

The 599XX is characterised by an innovative electronic concept called the 'High Performance Dynamic Concept', which has been designed to get maximum performance from the car by managing the combination of the car's mechanical limits with the potential of its electronic controls. The mechanical and electronic systems work together to get the maximum performance from the car under extreme high performance driving, for consistent lap times. The sporty handling has been improved thanks to the adoption of second generation SCM suspension system. Track usage is also made easier thanks to the new 'virtual car engineer', a screen in the car that provides a real-time indication of the vehicle's efficiency.

The 599XX's aerodynamics were honed in numerous Wind Tunnel test sessions with the result that the car now boasts 280 kg of down-force at 200 km/h (630 kg at 300 km/h). The front underside of the body is completely faired-in and the vents that channel hot air from the engine bay have been moved to the bonnet.
Ferari.599xx.jpg

The 'Actiflow™' system increases down-force and/or cuts drag, depending on the car's trim cornering conditions, courtesy of the use of a porous material in the diffuser and two fans in the boot, which channel the air flow from under the car out through two grilles next to the tail lights. Winglets have been added to the rear buttresses to increase downf-orce, while synthetic jets have also been incorporated into the rear of the car to control and smooth the air flow and to reduce drag. Ferrari's engineers have also used F1-derived 'doughnuts', which partly cover the brake discs and wheel rim. These have the dual functions of improving aerodynamics and cooling the brakes.

In terms of the bodywork, composites and carbon-fibre have been widely used and the engineers drew on their experience in working with aluminium to reach the weight target. The development of increasingly high-performance materials has also benefited the carbon-ceramic braking system. The brake pads are now made from carbon-fibre, which means the callipers are smaller while guaranteeing the same efficiency. The new racing carbon-ceramic braking system also delivers shorter braking distances and is generally more efficient due to the weight saving.

The 599XX comes with slick tyres (29/67 R19 front and 31/71 R19 rear),  specifically developed to maximise stability in cornering and increase lateral acceleration. They are fitted to 19 x 11J wheel rims at the front and 19 x 12J at the rear.

BMW Pull Over Half a Million Cars in U.S.

BMW.jpg

Detroit - It's the battery cables, car manufacturers BMW have to do a recall of about 570,000 units of cars in the U.S. and Canada.

Quoted in USA Today, the withdrawal applies to the 3 Series sedan model year 2007 to 2011, Series 1 in 2008 to 2012, and the Z4 sports car output 2009 to 2011.

Battery cables and terminals fuse in the car can be damaged over time, and this led to power outages. If this happens the effect is obvious, causing the engine to die suddenly.

BMW said that because of this, there has been one minor accident in Canada, but did not result in injury.

As in other parts of the country, the BMW 3 Series is the most popular cars that dominate the luxury car sales in the U.S.. In the U.S. there are a total of 100,000 units of the 3 Series cars were sold last year
